An important and impressive away league win for the Seniors yesterday evening (05/10/13) in a hard fought, physical match which saw 3 of the home side red carded. Termon, sitting second in the league, were very lucky to go in at half time with a one point lead as Naomh Muire were the better side in the first half playing some smart possession football at pace. The lads led most of the first half until Termon got a scrappy goal against the run of play.
The second half saw Termon come out looking for a win that would move them within league leaders Glenswilly and they showed their strength by building up a three point lead after ten minutes. However Shaun the Yank Boyle chipped County reserve keeper Michael Boyle for a goal and followed up with a point to put the lads ahead. It was at this point that Naomh Muire took the game by the scruff of the neck and although Termon tried to muscle their way out of the Naomh Muire comeback, former County player Sean O'Donnell was red carded for Termon for consistent dangerous play. This was two very important points and with two league games at home v Buncrana and Glenswilly....the lads will be targeting maximum points. It is still technically possible to make a promotion play-off and 4 points in the last two league games would be a great run-in. Credit to each and every player who played tonight and of course to Danny and his backroom team and whereas this is a great result.....the three remaining games including next weeks final are all HUGE games....what a great season end this can be. Tonight's result was achieved without regulars Paul the Yank, Owenie Mc Garvey and Jack O'Brien. We will certainly not forget another outstanding result by the Reserves tonight. Trailing by 4 points against a strong and experienced Termon side. ....the young lads battled back and played some great attacking football and won by four points. With several experienced players like Brian Feda, Darren Gallagher, Séamus Ferry steadying the ship...the mainly young side are a credit to watch and they never believe they are beaten. In this reserve side are many who are developing into players who can then push on to the Senior squad and that is no doubt where many of them are heading. The success of the Reserves this year has now set a strong platform of talent coming through. Credit to Gary Boyle and his mentors. A four point defeat in Bundoran this afternoon by the Seniors means a really tough league run-in with three matches left. Having played really well in the first half in blustery conditions, the second half performance just didn't happen and Bundoran took control after getting the crucial goal. It was a disappointing result leaving much to do in the remaining league matches to avoid getting caught up in a relegation battle.
The reserves won by a big margin and played well with some great football being played especially in the second half against the elements. Bundoran reserves were unable to shackle the strong running and support play of the Naomh Muire reserves on the day...well done. Naomh Muire are in the Intermediate Championship Final following today's semi-final win over Aodh Ruadh. Aodh Ruadh started the livelier and the lads were finding it hard to get any rhythm allowing Aodh Ruadh to get into a 0-04 to 0-01 lead and was it not for poor finishing by the Erne-siders they could have created damage early on. Naomh Muire scored their way back into level and just before half time. Paul the Yank Boyle converted a penalty putting the lads into a lead their possession may not have deserved. Aodh Ruadh overall would have been disappointed to be down by a goal at half time.
The second half was a different performance by Naomh Muire and apart from the opening 5 mins, the lads went on to dominate the second half adding a further 6 points with Aodh Ruadh managing only a single score late on. It's great to get to another Intermediate Championship final and that will be against the impressive St Nauls who beat Naomh Columba well last night. The prize is not only a county title at this level but Senior Championship football in 2014. St Naul's are a physically strong team led by Stephen Griffen. Naomh Muire will have to play the full hour in the final and a slow start like today will be punished without doubt. If the lads however can repeat the purple patch of today's match which was the last 20 mins of the second half and ensure that it is carried over the full game, they can topple St Naul's. In a way its good to come out of a Semi with plenty of work to do and things to improve and with time now to do that. No doubt Danny and the backroom team will get the lads down to serious preparation over the coming weeks and to be an hour away from Senior Championship football in 2014 requires little motivation. Well done to Team and Management and again to a good support. The victory in a Semi-final is what matters and the team especially this years Minors involved dedicated the win to young Conor Boyle, their mate, who is critical in Hospital in the UK. Team - Bryan Grant, Robbie O'Donnell, Brian Gillespie, Thomas Duffy, Sean Point Gallagher (0-01), Adi O Gara, Jack O'Brien, Owenie McGarvey, Paul Yank Boyle (1-01), Dara White, Padraig Mc Cafferty (0-01), Patrick Gillespie (0-01),Shaun Yank Boyle (0-03) Ciaran McGinley (0-01) Hugh Yank Boyle (0-1). Subs used - Harry Harden (0-2), John Pidgeon, Shaun Boyle, Owen Grant. A one point victory for the lads today against a Glenfin side that came into the match sitting second in the league and having played Senior Championship football up to last week. They were led by current All-Star Frank McGlynn.
This was an important and much deserved win with Naomh Muire showing great determination and fight in coming back on four occasions. Glenfin...a team traditionally one who like to score goals....scored their three goals when Naomh Muire showed signs of dominating and whereas other sides would have dropped heads......the young Naomh Muire side showed a really positive attitude to come back and edge ahead again on each occasion. Both sides lined out without a regular midfielder each...with Owenie McGarvey unable to play and Stephen McDermott also injured. Overall - Naomh Muire were the better side and the forwards total of 15 scores was important. The main difference however was a really good attitude from the entire team when things went against them today. Once again full credit to team and management today....the season ahead looks really good with a showing like this. In the earlier game the reserves had a great win. Another good performance from this young (and some not so young!) team. The final score was Naomh Muire 2-11 Glenfin 1-04. A hungrier away side took the spoils in the Banks today in a disappointing home defeat for the Seniors. With a cross wind slightly favouring the lads in the first half and taking a 3 point lead- Mac Cumhaills fought hard before the break to narrow it to a point by half time. The second half saw Mac Cumhaills get into a two point lead before being awarded a penalty which was well saved by Sean Gallagher. Naomh Muire fought back after being 3 down but couldn't get that final point which would have seen a share of the points. Reserves - Naomh Muire 3-11 v Mc Cumhaills 1-08 The Reserves put in a fine hour of open football with probably one of the youngest teams to take the field in recent years. Packed with Minors from both this year and last they cut through Mac Cumhaills with some really good football and finishing. Not the best of days- However plenty to play for in what is becoming a tough and tight league. Naomh Muire will still have huge bearing on happenings in the league over the rest of the season. 05/05/13 Torthaí Roinn 2
An Chlochán Liath 0-06 Seán Mac Cumhaill 0-06 Gleann Fhinne 1-11 An Tearmann 0-11 Bun Dobhrán 1-11 Bun Crannach 1-10 Another home victory leaves our Senior side slipping into 2nd in the league following this impressive home win against Termon in the Banks.
Like the Bundoran match last week- the lads took the initiative early on and opened with a goal from a penalty and led up to HT- going in with a 4 point lead. Termon came back strong in the early part of the 2nd half and equalized with 15 gone. The boys were not in the match at this point and it looked as if Termon were going to dominate. However in an impressive final 15 mins Naomh Muire took control around the middle and eventually pulled away with superior fitness and finishing to get these all important league points. Some great passages of play and good attitude lines up an away match with Glenswilly next week.....and matches like that are what playing at this level is all about .Going on fitness and ability a win in the Glen next week is not beyond our Seniors. Mighty stuff today and well done to Danny and the boys. 19/04/2013 Division 2 League Results
