Aodh Ruadh are without doubt Donegal's most historic and successful club side. Whereas Naomh Muire are a "teenage" club having started in 1980.....Aodh Ruadh go back 102 years. Apart from the last decade 2000-2010....they have won at least a Senior Championship in every decade and were part of the great St Josephs side of the 60s and 70s. They have contributed some outstanding players to Donegal football including the record Donegal appearance player Brian Roper (pictured). A great club by all means. This respect for our visitors will and should last to 6.15pm on Saturday evening but then the business of playing them starts as our Naomh Mhuire Seniors aim to stay top of the league table division 3. In the past, the Club would be simply content to have Aodh Ruadh and similar clubs appear at the banks but those days are gone. Let's get down to all home games...and many away games this year and make big positive noises of support....an odd grunt and groan but not abuse at a ref and let the reserves and seniors know we are there . These lads deserve this....so all out this Saturday evening and support the lads in action. All under 10s were outstanding in the blitz game yesterday against Gaoth Dobhair. The players who performed best in the three games were-
First competative game of the season for the Ladies today. It was back to Mountcharles to play Naomh Naille Ladies. St. Nauls had a very strong footballing team on show today and with county players Eilish Ward and Ainalise Breslin in top form our young team were facing a stiff test. As the scoreline show Nauls were in scoring mood today,at half time our girls trailed by 2-08 to 0-02. In the second half Naomh Mhuire started to show their never say die attitude and made St. Nauls fight for every score. While today was a heavy defeat, with a full squad available the ladies will surely test a lot of teams this season. It has to be noted that nearly two thirds of the team that line The Ladies can get back to their winning form of last year if they get the momentum back into training. They have some outstanding players, a big panel with shrewd management and driven this year by a great committee......so its all to play for this early in the season and it will be great to see the ladies get their show on the road as they will no doubt.

With both teams having won 2 of their opening three league games it was always going to be a close game and so it proved. Naomh Mhuire started extremely well and raced into an early 2 point lead with some great running of the ball. They also hit the crossbar and were denied another goal chance by the bundoran keeper. Bundoran 1st score was a goal from their big midfielder and they then got a point. Naomh Mhuire looked dangerous in attack and kept the scoreboard ticking over with good play from the full-forward line and good support play from Hugh Boyle, Jamie Boyle, Patrick Rodgers and also Sean Burns who never stopped running all game. The half-time score was Bundoran 1-07 to Naomh Mhuire 0-10 points after some great scores from both teams. The 2nd half was nip and tuck until the impressive james ferry scored a goal to give Naomh Mhuire the lead. However Bundoran responded with a goal of their own. Bundoran then got a penalty that seemed to be well outside the box to go 5 points clear. Naomh Mhuire then got another goal from Ferry again to get Naomh Mhuire back in the game. Bundoran then stretched their lead out to 4 points with 5 minutes remaining. Naomh Mhuire pushed hard and got 2 great scores from Jamie Boyle and a 45 from Sean mc Cafferty to leave 2 points in it with only a couple of mins left. Naomh Mhuire then won another free which drifted just wide. With the game in injury time, Naomh Mhuire won another kick-out and another free-kick. The ball was played in high and was punched goalwards by a Naomh Mhuire forward but just missed the far post. Overall, a good sporting game which was well refereed by Liam Browne. Naomh Mhuire had a good team display with Sean Burns, James Ferry and Sean mc Cafferty excellent throughout. On another day, Naomh Mhuire could easily have come away with the spoils and they nearly stole the points at the end. They played until the final whistle which is a good quality this team have.

Senior: St. Nauls 1-06 Naomh Mhuire 1-10
Played in good conditions with a light breeze in Mountcharles this evening, Naomh Mhuire came away with an excellent victory. It was a close affair in the first half with the home team shading the possession. A late rally from St. Nauls where they scored 1-1 in the last few minutes, left the score at half time 1-04 to 0-05. Trailing by two points the visiting side went in at half time knowing that they were up against it. An Owenie McGarvey converted penalty early in the second half inspired Naomh Mhuire and with some excellent defensive displays they restricted the home team to just two points in the second half. MIdway through the half it was all square at 1-06 a piece. From there on some superb point taking saw Naomh Mhuire run out winners by four points in the end. An excellent away victory, well done lads. The club would like to wish Charlie Doherty a speedy recovery from the injury he sustained during this victory. Naomh Muire: 1. Seán Gallagher, 2. JC Mullholland, 3. Thomas Duffy, 4. Charlie Doherty, 5. Pádraig McCafferty, 6. Séamus Ferry, 7. Daniel Gallagher, 8. Owenie McGarvey (1-0), 9. Brian Gillespie, 10. Harry Harden (2 pts), 11. Owen Grant (4 pts), 12. Paul Boyle, 13. Shaun Boyle, 14. Tom McHugh (1 pt.), 15. Ciaran McGinley (3 pts). Subs: Dara White for Pádraig McCafferty, Sean Boyle for Charlie Doherty, Sean Point for Sean Boyle, Adi O Gara for Harry Harden Reserve: St. Nauls 2-11 Naomh Mhuire 1-09 Earlier the reserve team produced a spirited display away from home. In a tough match the home team had the upper hand and won five points in the end. A good effort from the lads in what was always going to be a tough away game. What a great day for Naomh Mhuire under age. A blitz between Naomh Mhuire & Gaoth Dobhair in the Banks. Photos in gallery. A big thank you to all who helped make the day a success. Seeing such a large number of underage coaches and helpers in one place at the one time is very heartening. This work goes on behind the scene every week and the club is very greatful to all involved. Let's not forget the ladies who provide the tae! Go raibh maith agaibh uilig. Naomh Mhuire reserves and seniors play away to St Nauls this evening 4.45pm and 6.15pm. Support is important in these games as we make a big drive towards promotion. St Nauls are a strong side, led by County player Stephen Griffen but our seniors have the bit between their teeth this year and they won't be happy coming away with anything but a win. Good luck lads.
Big Fight Night DVD's are now on sale at Siopa Chroithshlí priced at a reasonable €10. The DVD covers all the build up and the big fights themselves and make great viewing.
Played under very wet conditions in the banks last night our Minor side could have done better in this opening league match. Although they had a contested "goal" ruled out in the opening half, Naomh Mhuire still went in all square at half time. Naomh Conaill, led by All-Ireland Vocational school captain and senior player John O Malley then raced into a 7 point lead in the second half. A Darragh White Goal pulled things back but Naomh Mhuire had too many wides which you just don't get away with at this level. The display was spirited and Naomh Conaill knew they were in a game alright but finishing off great passages of play with scores was again the difference.
The game was played in very poor conditions and although we are well past the stage of being simply content to have the big Clubs like Naomh Conaill play us in Division 1.....it was a game that could have been won and knowing this group of lads...it will make them more determined in their next match away to St Naul's. Heads up and march on. |
